Sandals Grenada vs Royal Curaçao: which is better for diving?

Published September 2026

Ask which Sandals resort has the best diving and you get the same two answers, over and over: Grenada and Royal Curaçao. Both have dive operations on site, both include unlimited diving for certified guests, and both sit far enough south to escape the worst of hurricane season. If diving is the reason you are choosing a resort at all, these are the two to compare.

They are not interchangeable, though. The diving is genuinely different in character, and so is what you do on the days you are not in the water.

Grenada: wrecks, and one dive nowhere else has

Grenada is the wreck diving capital of the Caribbean, and the useful detail is that most of its wrecks went down by accident rather than being scuttled to make artificial reefs. The Bianca C is the one people travel for — a cruise liner that sank in 1961, sitting deep enough that it is properly an advanced dive rather than something you drop in on during your first week with a C-card.

The other headline is the Molinere Underwater Sculpture Park, a submerged installation of figures that has become an artificial reef in its own right. It is shallow, it is strange, and it is the single most photographed dive in the chain. Beyond those two, sites like Purple Rain and Shark Reef cover the reef diving.

Practically, Grenada also has the shortest airport transfer of the two — roughly ten minutes from the airport to the resort, which is the second-fastest in the entire Sandals portfolio. If you are flying in on a tight schedule and want to dive the next morning, that matters more than it sounds.

Royal Curaçao: easier water, better for beginners

Curaçao’s reputation is built on accessibility rather than drama. The island has close to a hundred dive sites, much of the reef sits close to shore, and visibility is typically in the 60 to 80 foot range. The resort is on the calmer southwestern coast, and its instructors have a reputation for being patient with first-timers — which is the thing to weigh if one of you dives and the other is thinking about learning.

That does not mean it lacks signature dives. The Superior Producer, a cargo ship that went down in 1977, is regularly called the best wreck dive in the Caribbean. Watamula is a drift dive where two currents meet, with hard and soft coral throughout. The Mushroom Forest, the Tugboat and Alice in Wonderland are all within reach.

The resort itself is newer, opened in 2022, and has one genuinely unusual feature for an all-inclusive: an included MINI Cooper rental. Sandals actively expects you to drive out and explore, which for divers means shore-diving sites elsewhere on the island are realistically reachable rather than theoretical.

What both include

Diving is unlimited for certified divers at both, on production of a certification card and after a basic orientation. Neither charges extra for boat dives. Certification courses cost extra — the PADI Discover Scuba experience is a three-hour programme that qualifies you for a single open water dive, with the option to complete the eLearning portion before you arrive.

One piece of planning advice that applies at both: dive slots fill up, particularly in high season, so book on arrival rather than the night before. And do not dive on your last day — the standard guidance is to leave 18 to 24 hours between your final dive and flying.

So which one?

If you are both certified and you came for the diving, take Grenada. The Bianca C and the sculpture park are dives you cannot do anywhere else in the chain, and the short airport transfer buys you an extra morning in the water.

If one of you is learning, or you want diving to be one part of the holiday rather than its organising principle, take Royal Curaçao. Calmer water, gentler instruction, reef close to shore, and a car to explore the island on your surface days.
